Objective 2: E-Prescribing

E-Prescribing is a prescriber’s ability to electronically send an accurate, error-free and understandable prescription directly to a pharmacy from the point-of-care, and is considered an important element in improving the quality of patient care.

In 2019 Stage 3 meaningful use, permissible prescriptions, authorized by an eligible provider (EP), should be generated and transmitted electronically.

This measure requires that more than 60% of all permissible prescriptions written by the EP are queried for a drug formulary and transmitted electronically using certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT).

An EP can claim an exclusion if they either:

(1) Write fewer than 100 permissible prescriptions during the PI reporting period, or

(2) Do not have a pharmacy within their organization and there are no pharmacies that accept electronic prescriptions within 10 miles of the EP’s practice location at the start of their PI reporting period.
