About the Illinois Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center

The Illinois Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center (ILHITREC), based at Northern Illinois University, supports thousands of Illinois providers and practices annually in quality improvement, meaningful use and incentive program participation.  ILHITREC facilitates the implementation of federal and state health care initiatives throughout Illinois, linking providers with the resources they need through partnerships, access to subject matter experts, funding and other tools.  ILHITREC’s goal is to help facilitate healthcare transformation in order to meet national goals:

  • Improve quality, efficiency and reduce health disparities
  • Engage patients and families in their healthcare
  • Improve care coordination
  • Improve population and public health
  • Maintaining privacy and security
  • Reduce healthcare costs

ILHITREC serves as a change agent responding to providers needs by leveraging our strengths to develop tailored services to address those needs. The initial activities of the REC were customized to address the barriers and local market conditions of our target providers in three main domains: technical, organizational, and economical.  ILHITREC engaged in core activities (EHR implementation, health information exchange, patient and family engagement, EHR optimization to achieve meaningful use) as part of the initial programs.

With changes in physician fee schedules, migration from pay-for-performance to value based care, and other payment reform activities, ILHITREC is responding to providers and practices with regional, optimized support. ILHITREC provides the direct technical assistance and hands-on support to help providers participate in quality improvement demonstrations and programs such as Tranforming Clinical Practices Initiative (TCPI) and Million Hearts, as well as new care delivery and payment system reform models (e.g. MIPS, APMs, ACOs and PCMH).

ILHITREC support is provided no cost to eligible providers of the federal and state projects and initiatives delivered for these services.
